Sources of energy

The world supply of energy mainly consists of fossil fuels, which is about 80% of the total supply. Oil, which is the most important kind of energy, is increasing by 2% every year. A large percentage of this increase is in the transport sector. Although there are large reserves, we know that they will eventually come to an end and we need to concentrate on renewable forms of energy such as sun, wind and biomass.

The well-known fossil reserves are:
· 218 times of yearly production of coal
· 63 times of yearly production of fossil gas (natural gas)
· 41 times of yearly production of oil

Most of those in the oil industry believe that the oil production would have reached its peak during the first five years of the new millennium, after which it would decline due to new and advanced exploration techniques for its extraction. One of the driving forces for USA to concentrate on alternative fuels is the fact that 70% of the oil reserves are found in the Middle East and the earlier Soviet Union; USA alone has a consumption of 25% of the global consumption.
